Floating Future: housing and energy production on the water

11:45 - 12:30 uur @ Tent 4

What would it really be like to live in a house on the water, or to work in an office that is floating before the coast? What barriers and opportunities – social, technical, ecological, and governance- are there for upscaling structures for such floating neighborhoods or office hubs?

In this interactive session we would like to hear about your opinion. We first will provide you with an update on the development and upscaling of floating structures, specifically for floating housing and energy production – inland, coastal or offshore. Climate change, rising sea levels, and limited availability of space all pose challenges in the Netherlands and globally. Moving from land to water is one possible solution for housing and other infrastructure which has the potential to be more climate resilient, space saving, and ecologically friendly. In this session we will share examples of already existing floating housing and then discuss with you the value and potential of a shift towards floating houses, neighborhoods, and even cities. We will also share some insights on the topic of sustainable energy production, especially by means of floating solar panels.

The NWO-funded Floating Future project includes researchers from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The project studies the possibilities of floating housing, food production, energy production, and other infrastructure using 5 case studies in the Netherlands.
